“And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”

Luke 2:49

Devotional

When it comes to our businesses, do we know our Father’s business? In any role in any business, be it as an owner, a supervisor, an employee, a customer, or a colleague, there is a clear role our heavenly Father has for us. This role is never to do, to strive, to obtain, or even to lead. This role is always to know, to obey, to receive, and to follow. Everywhere the Lord went, He was about His Father’s business, so much so that when people were seeking Him, He reminded them that they should have known. He ‘must’ be about His Father’s business. There was no place He needed to or, for that matter, even could be. His whole being is, was, and ever more shall be in and of that business and so it is to be with all who are His.

The world, our staff, and our colleagues see and, knowing it or not, take comfort in the Christ they see in us. He forges relationships, trust, and contracts of His faithful, steadfast love. Yes, be faithful. Yes, be forthright. Yes, be fair but let us be so of the overflow of Him in & through us. Every result we wish to see from our business and our role in it is then fruit of His work and not of our own. Business is a responsibility and in this world, it is a battle but it is always a ministry. That means first and foremost, it is a call and it’s all His.

The Lord came that we may know the Father. He sends us that, in Him and through our business roles, the world may know Him. We are His witness to a watching world, a light to the lost in every respect. This does not change when we punch in or punch out. His life is in us and it never changes. Our workplaces and customers see the same Christ in us that we have for friends and family, for elders and disciples, and for the lost and the broken. As we go about our business, let it be that of our Father in heaven by the love of Him who He sent.

Prayer

Father, Jesus, Spirit, we love you, we thank you, we praise you. When we go to work, when we conduct business, and when we lead others in it, let us be about your business, Father. Let us live in Your love, Lord. Let us lead after You, Holy Spirit. We know You will guide us in and though all that all may see and know You. Let us live Your gospel truth that the world may ask after the Hope we have in You and You, alone; above the skills, gifts, and abilities You have entrusted to us. Let it be even more so as the day approaches, that to You alone be all glory, honor, and praise, forever and ever amen.
