“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
John 15:13
Devotional
Veterans are the seed carriers of our nation’s DNA in all that is good, having lived out the words of John 15:13 in real and tangible ways. They understand sacrifice not as a concept, but as a calling.
They have stood in the gap.
They have gone where others would not go.
They have carried responsibility for the sake of others.
This is the heart of laying down one’s life.
But Scripture does not stop there.
In Romans 12:1, we are called to offer our lives as a living sacrifice. This is not a moment. It is a posture. It is a daily act of surrender.
Veterans have already been trained in this way of living. The battlefield revealed it. Now life is asking them to continue it.
So, what happens when the mission changes?
When the uniform comes off?
Many veterans wrestle with a quiet, persistent question:
What is my purpose now?
The enemy would have them believe their greatest days are behind them.
That their identity was tied to a single season of service.
But Scripture tells a different story.
The sacrifice was never meant to end.
It was meant to transform.
The same love that called you to serve is not finished with you.
It is continuing through you.
Laying down your life now looks like:
• Showing up for your family with presence and strength
• Serving your community with humility and leadership
• Mentoring the next generation with wisdom and integrity
• Choosing purpose over isolation, and connection over withdrawal
This is still sacrifice.
This is still service.
This is still obedience.
The mission has not ended.
It has expanded.
God is calling veterans to remain warriors.
Not only in defense of a nation.
But in the restoration of lives, families, and communities.
This is the next assignment.
And it still requires courage.
Commissioning
Go forward as a living sacrifice. Stand in the gap once more, now in the places God has called you. Carry your strength into your family, your integrity into your community, and your leadership into the next generation. Do not look back as if your mission is finished.
Step forward knowing it has been expanded. Live with the same courage, the same discipline, and the same love that once led you to serve. And trust that the God who called you then is still calling you now.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the men and women who have answered the call to serve and protect. Thank You for placing within them a willingness to lay down their lives for others, a reflection of Your love.
Today, we lift up every veteran.
For those who are thriving, strengthen their purpose.
For those who are struggling, meet them in their pain and remind them they are not alone.Lord, restore identity where it has been lost.
Renew purpose where it has been questioned.
Reignite calling where it has grown dim.Teach them that their sacrifice did not end with their service
It has simply taken on a new formSurround veterans with the right people, the right opportunities, and the right support as they step into this next season.
Use them as leaders, mentors, and builders of strong communities.
May they reflect Your love in how they live each day moving forward. We honor their service, and we trust in Your plan for their future.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
