    Small/Tiny Home Affordability Questions

@Etcetera and I and some friends are interested in exploring small/tiny homes. While we’re interested in less-toxic and sustainable construction, our main driver is affordability. A big driver for this is our own cases:

    • What does it look like for a young person to live a local and rooted like without huge debt that requires consuming participation in the industrial economy?
    • What does it look like for young couples and families to have space to live without crushing debt and an abandonment of local service, calling, and ministry?
    • How can we use new models to solve the housing and affordability crises?
    • How can we build multi-generational communities with security for elders while investing significantly in the next generation?

There are some practical questions that may shape our model:

    1. What are code limitations and their impact on affordability? Can we use hemp-Crete? Is it acceptable to use composting toilets and gray water systems? Can we use our own lumber for timber frame and stick sub walls?
    2. Can we create land partnerships that open up land access in creative ways? How do manage risk for all parties?
    3. What are the legal entities and operating models of multiple families in common stewardship of land and other resources?

These are a good starting set to begin doing research and building some models on paper.
