The Thoughts of Our Hearts
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
What does it mean by thoughts and attitudes of the heart? Can our physical pump (heart) really have thoughts of its own? While there is some debate about this question, most neuroscientists would say that all thoughts are in the mind. The heart is influenced and reacts to thoughts, feelings, and emotions. That feeling you get in your chest (no, not a heart attack), the increased pulse rate, the rise in blood pressure are in response to what the mind is thinking. The thoughts in our minds can also produce feelings of peace, love, and joy which cause our hearts to relax and our breathing to be calm, which lower blood pressure and pulse.
If this is true, what does He mean when God says: “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” (Jeremiah 31:33) Could it be that God is saying that the more saturated our minds are with His laws (guidelines for life) the more our hearts will be filled with the feelings and emotions that come from Him? Maybe this is what the apostle Paul was talking about in his letter to the Philippians when he said: “4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (4:4-7)
Let’s talk about it.
